Laboratory Jobs Vacancy in Uganda at US Mission

Job Title: Public Health Specialist Laboratory

Qualifications

Education  required  :
Completion  of a  bachelor’s  degree in Medical  Laboratory  Technology is  required  Additional six  months hands-on  post-graduation training in a clinical  setting  is required  .
Registration with the  Ministry of Health  Allied  Health  Professional  Council is required.

Work experience  required  .
A minimum  of five  years working  in a clinical  laboratory   setting either  HIV/AIDS  health care or a national reference  laboratory  or research oriented facility  is required  of  which  three years  were  in implementing  or overseeing  laboratory   quality systems

Knowledge  required.
Comprehensive  knowledge and  experience  in advanced  laboratory  medicine  is required  including  a  comprehensive  knowledge of procedures  for laboratory  diagnostics laboratory  informatics  and  associated technologies .
Through  knowledge  of the  current  HIV/AIDS  national  and global  situation  is  required .
Good  working knowledge  of the principles  of laboratory   management including  strategic planning  , personal management  and forecasting  and management   of procurement  supplies  and equipment  is required .

Roles;

After  an initial  application  screening  applicants  will be  invited  to a  testing   process  that may  include  a  written  examination  and oral  interviews.

The  selected  candidate must pass pre-employment  medical  and  security  investigations  before  beginning  work  . The  initial  appointment  period  is one  year  , subject  to renewal .

Normally  candidates for  employment  are  hired  at the  first  step of the  designated per grade.  In some  instances  , candidates  may be  hired  at a  higher step  when  exceptional  qualifications  or  previous  governmental  service  and pay  level  so  warrant .

The  Human  Resources  Officer  will make  the decision  with  the concurrence of the employing section.

Laboratory Technologists Jobs at Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP)

Job Description

The Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) is a non¬government, non- profit HIV research program that was established in 2002 as a result of a memorandum of understanding between Makerere University and The Henry M. Jackson foundation for Advancement of Military Medicine Inc.’of USA (HJF).The primary purpose of MUWRP is to develop, evaluate and provide interventions to mitigate communicable disease threats of public health importance to Uganda. Activities include; vaccine development and building of vaccine testing capability in Uganda, conducting of epidemiological and basic research and provision of HIV Treatment, care and support and surveillance of influenza and other emerging infections. The Project is looking for suitable candidates to fill the positions below:

POSITION TITLE: Laboratory Technologists, 2 positions
LOCATION: MUWRP Laboratory, located at Makerere University Medical School

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Proficiently perform HIV serology/viral load, Hep B and C assays and syphilis RPR and TPPA assays and APTIMA as per the SOPs.
2. Proficiently conduct Manual Hematology and white blood cell count as established by the SOPs for each Assay.
3. Learn and become proficient in new assays and technologies brought in the lab.
5. Maintain laboratory equipment, including but not limited to service and repair as established by SOPs and QA/QC guidelines.
6. Maintain lab databases and keep up with current software applications for specific departments.
7. Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirement:

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE:
~ 1. Bachelors degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology,
2. Bachelors in Medical Laboratory Sciences or any related science laboratory field.
3. Diploma in medical laboratory technology, knowledge and practice in Hematology will be an added advantage.
4. At least 2 years working experience in a medical/research laboratory preferably CAP accredited.

PHYSICAL ABILITY: Ability to professionally communicate in writing and verbally or other means deemed appropriate. The incumbent should have ability to travel to and from work and the Project’s collaborative sites in Kayunga, Entebbe and any other if necessary. The incumbent will from time to time be required to lift some lab supplies to and from the lab to the required destination as he/she may be directed by his/her superiors. The incumbent is also expected to able to sit for extended periods of time.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor or his/her designee as mutually agreed upon with the Laboratory Co- Director.

Laboratory Field Assistant (1 position)

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to perform a support role in the production of vaccine products in accordance with regulatory requirements and cGMP. Responsibilities include performing a wide variety of tasks within a team environment focusing on coordinating laboratory activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned)

•     Carry out laboratory and field tasks under minimum supervision.

•     Record observations, measurements and report the results.

•     Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, maintaining clean rooms and equipment.

•     Assist with receipt and inspection of raw materials, and ordering and stocking of materials and equipment.

•     Assist in collection and transportation of field samples, finished products, equipment etc.

Additional responsibilities include assisting in experiments of simple to moderate complexity under supervision, preparing technical reports, and summaries of assigned projects. The candidate must be comfortable performing laboratory bench work. This individual will adhere to all requirements of established quality systems.

Requirement:
Qualifications

The ideal candidate should possess a minimum of a Diploma in a laboratory related field. Preference will be given to individuals with work experience in a Research or GMP Quality Control laboratory; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Fundamental knowledge of regulatory requirements, such as current GMP regulations and the ability to review and understand test data is highly desirable.
Understanding and the ability to follow safety precautions and procedures which apply to the activities in the laboratory is required.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a dynamic fast paced environment is a necessity. Candidates must be able to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and also have the ability to work independently.
Candidates must have strong mathematics skills; strong scientific background; excellent skills in prioritization and achievement of goals and objectives; excellent written and verbal communication skills, a strong work ethic, computer literacy, and the ability to work independently following verbal instructions and SOPs. Flexibility and a passion to drive for results are key for this position.
Candidates MUST possess a clean, valid driver’s license as the position involves a significant amount of field work.
