Job Description

The Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) is a non¬government, non- profit HIV research program that was established in 2002 as a result of a memorandum of understanding between Makerere University and The Henry M. Jackson foundation for Advancement of Military Medicine Inc.’of USA (HJF).The primary purpose of MUWRP is to develop, evaluate and provide interventions to mitigate communicable disease threats of public health importance to Uganda. Activities include; vaccine development and building of vaccine testing capability in Uganda, conducting of epidemiological and basic research and provision of HIV Treatment, care and support and surveillance of influenza and other emerging infections. The Project is looking for suitable candidates to fill the positions below:

POSITION TITLE: Laboratory Technologists, 2 positions
LOCATION: MUWRP Laboratory, located at Makerere University Medical School

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Proficiently perform HIV serology/viral load, Hep B and C assays and syphilis RPR and TPPA assays and APTIMA as per the SOPs.
2. Proficiently conduct Manual Hematology and white blood cell count as established by the SOPs for each Assay.
3. Learn and become proficient in new assays and technologies brought in the lab.
5. Maintain laboratory equipment, including but not limited to service and repair as established by SOPs and QA/QC guidelines.
6. Maintain lab databases and keep up with current software applications for specific departments.
7. Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirement:

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE:
~ 1. Bachelors degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology,
2. Bachelors in Medical Laboratory Sciences or any related science laboratory field.
3. Diploma in medical laboratory technology, knowledge and practice in Hematology will be an added advantage.
4. At least 2 years working experience in a medical/research laboratory preferably CAP accredited.

PHYSICAL ABILITY: Ability to professionally communicate in writing and verbally or other means deemed appropriate. The incumbent should have ability to travel to and from work and the Project’s collaborative sites in Kayunga, Entebbe and any other if necessary. The incumbent will from time to time be required to lift some lab supplies to and from the lab to the required destination as he/she may be directed by his/her superiors. The incumbent is also expected to able to sit for extended periods of time.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor or his/her designee as mutually agreed upon with the Laboratory Co- Director.

JOB TITLE: Intern for Commercial Pilot of Low-Cost Rainwater Storage Product

LOCATION: Mbarara, UGANDA

DURATION: 12 months (with possibility of extension)

START DATE: July 2012

SUMMARY: The Intern needs to have a diverse skill set that demonstrates creativity, operational management and ability to train. The intern will work closely with the RI field staff and the clients using the flexible rainwater storage product. The intern will oversee the final assembly of the product in Uganda and develop a quality control system. In addition the intern will improve the ease of installation of the rainwater bag and will improve upon the training program for installers to rapidly increase the number of installer in Uganda. He/ She will work closely with the RI Technical Director to develop improved installation methods and to make the product more user-friendly. The successful candidate will also work closely with the Project Manager to ensure that supply chain for the product is maintained.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical Support:

• Provide oversight and supervise training for workers that are assembling the final product in Uganda • Improve the training program for installers of the rainwater bag in order to increase the installation capacity in Uganda.
• Provide support to the marketing team with ideas and • Provide follow-up in the field for the early adopters to identify potential design and performance issues and to recommend solutions to the RI Technical Staff; • Provide inputs to improve the user friendliness of the product and to reduce installation and production costs.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

• Graduate engineer or business major with a combination of education and experience in product assembly, construction, and product promotion. • Experience in product assembly a plus. • Experience as a trainer important, since much of the work will involve training of local staff and installers. • Marketing and promotion experience also desired. • Experience living and working in a developing country context. • Strong motivation to take on the challenges involved in developing products for the households at the bottom of the pyramid. • Fluency in English. Local language skills a plus.

Salary / Pay: A stipend of $1350 per month. Accommodations: Stipend includes housing costs. RI will assist with finding appropriate lodging for intern. Insurance: Traveler’s Health and Evacuation Insurance provided.

Job Purpose:
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Sub Office, the incumbent will provide programme support to Field Offices and assist the Head of Sub Office the overall management of the Sub Office and will be required to undertake the following:-

Duties and Responsibilities:
•    Provide programme support, coordination and replication of best practices, which includes implementation and monitoring of programmes and activities across WFP’s Field Offices in the Karamoja region;
•    Develop and sustain liaison with key professionals and NGOs engaged in the field of food security;
•    Prepare timely analytical and critical reports including proposals for improvements in operation and the scope of programmes;
•    Assess the need for food in emergency and refugee/displaced person situations, draw up plans for its timely arrival in coordination with government and other donors, and monitor the implementation of these plans;
•    Assist the government in identifying fields of development where food assistance can be usefully employed and give assistance in planning, formulating, and targeting recipients for new requests for WFP assistance;
•    Liaise with project implementing authorities and undertake visits to view project outputs and beneficiaries, inspect storage places and points where WFP commodities are received in the country, in order to ensure that progress is made in the achievement of project objectives;
•    Develop and maintain databases of indicators relating to food security and WFP projects;
•    Provide continuing liaison with bilateral food aid programmes, with UN agencies and with NGOs providing technical or other forms of assistance to WFP assisted projects;
•    Assist the government on the maintenance of all records, accounts and books as stipulated in the Plan of Operations or the Letter of Understanding and ensure that reports required for WFP are accurate and provided as scheduled;
•    Prepare periodic reports on the progress of operational projects and related government plans;
•    Ensure compliance with WFP’s policies, criteria and procedures with respect to food aid;
•    Assist in all matters related to the delivery of WFP emergency assistance and bring to the attention of appropriate staff any administrative constraints arising from rapidly evolving emergency situations in the field;
•    Assist in preparation/update of the early warning, risk analysis and contingency planning in order to respond to humanitarian crises. Periodically monitor the management of risks and report on any actions taken;
•    Assist and prepare all necessary background for stakeholders visiting WFP operations in Karamoja
•    Provide training and technical guidance for staff in their work;
•    Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience:
Applicants should be mature persons of high integrity with good analytical skills; resourcefulness, good interpersonal skills, ability to work in a multicultural team environment and a good sense of initiative and judgment coupled with the following:-
    A University degree in any of the following fields, economics, agriculture, international affairs, business administration, social sciences, development studies or a field relevant to international development assistance obtained from a recognized institution;
    At least one (1) year of postgraduate professional experience in commerce, business administration, development, or food aid support. and effective management of staff gained from a reputable organization;
    General knowledge of WFP system policies, rules, regulations and procedures governing administration;
    Good knowledge and skills in using MS Office applications;
    Good command of English is vital;
