Entomologist Job Vacancy at National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO)FULL TIME

About this Job:

National Agricultural Research Organization is implementing a public-private partnership project with international, regional and local institutions on water efficient maize for Africa (WEMA). The project aims to improve food security and rural livelihoods among small-scale maize producers in Africa by developing drought tolerant-hybrid maize varieties. This Project is funded through African Agricultural Technology Foundation by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Howard Buffet Foundation. Feed the Future initiative of USAID is also supporting NARO to improve food security, health and nutrition.

NARO is seeking for dynamic scientists and technicians to implement project activities under the cereals program at the National Crops Resources Research Institute as follows

ENTOMOLOGIST (1 Position) USAID-Feed the Future

Task and Responsibilities:
 Design entomology trials and collect, analyse and on-farm research trial data
 Develop and implement farmer participatory research methodologies
 In collaboration with breeders, develop maize inbred lines, hybrids, and open-pollinated varieties resistant to stem borers and post harvest pests (maize weevil and larger grain borer)
 Develop appropriate crop pest management technologies that are gender responsive
 Technically backstop breeders in insect resistant research
 Offer training to farmers, extension personnel, and other interested parties
 Developing grant proposals to secure funding for conducting specific research programs in line with the institute’s strategic management plan


Requirement:

Required Skills/Experiences:
 PhD in entomology or associated disciplines.
  Applied knowledge of experimental design, management of field trials, and field breeding operations.
 Experience in insect rearing and use in screening for resistance in lab and field- based crop research. Excellent computer skills and experience with SAS, GENSTAT or other statistical software.
