The STOP Malaria project (SMP) is a flagship project of USAID/PMI Uganda. The project aims to increase the coverage and use of key life-saving malaria interventions in support of the National Malaria Control Strategy in order to significantly reduce the morbidity and mortality from malaria in Uganda. The project was implemented in 34 highly malarious districts over a 5 year period which started in October 2008. SMP offers a partnership uniquely positioned to deliver this implementation rollout. Partners include the Center for Communication Programs (CCP) of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health (the leading agency), Malaria Consortium, Infectious Disease Institute, Communication for development Foundation Uganda
Major purpose
The Malaria Technical officer will be responsible for working with the districts in Central region that are supported by the Stop Malaria Project to implement facility and community based malaria control activities. The position is also responsible for ensuring the timely and acceptable implementation of the SMP work plan in the region districts of the project. The position will require frequent travel in the Central Region districts of the project.
Specific responsibilities
1. Assist with implementing the following interventions and activities in Hoima Region:
a. ANC LLIN distribution systems
b. Campaign LLIN distributions
c. Training health workers on increased intermittent preventive treatment uptake among pregnant women
d. Training health workers on the diagnosis of malaria using both RDTs and microscopy
e. Training health workers on management of severe malaria at pre-referral and referral levels
f. Improved treatment seeking behaviour of carers of children with febrile illnesses
g. Improved support and supervision of malaria control interventions at district level
2. Organise and represent the STOP Malaria Project at district level technical meetings
3. Participate in district support supervision and Clinical audits
4. Assist with the planning/ organizing and chairing of Regional SMP quarterly Review meetings with the district leadership.
5. Carry out additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a health related or social science field.
• Thorough understanding of both preventive and curative aspects of malaria control
• At least 2 years experience of working with district health systems in Uganda
• Fluency in English – both written and spoken. Familiarity with Luganda is an added advantage.
• Experience of working in communicable disease control, preferably malaria control
• Familiarity with the strategies and guidelines of the Uganda National Malaria Control Programme;
• Proven experience in training of trainers and health supervisors.
