Job Title: Legal Officer

Job Description

Location: Head Office

Reports to: General Manager

His or her major duties will be to provide legal services to HOFOKAM LTD Board of Directors, Management and staff in line with the company policies, procedures and the laws of Uganda.

Working Relationships

The legal officer is a senior officer in the organization and deals with the Senior Managers (Heads of other Departments), Branch Managers and directly and reports to the General Manager.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

To provide quick and timely legal advice to HOFOKAM Ltd. on issues concerning the organization’s Operations in accordance with the company policies and the laws of Uganda.
Drafting agreements which are executed by HOFOKAM while ensuring that the organization’s interests are well protected.
Regularly review the contracts drafted by HOFOKAM Ltd external clients and advice on the effects of the terms embedded there in.
Continuously do research and update management on the changes in the laws of Uganda that can affect HOFOKAM Ltd. operations.
Review loan and mortgage documents regularly, securities pledged by clients to ensure are well registered to protect HOFOKAM Ltd. interests.
Verify securities presented by clients to guard against any encumbrances
Designing recovery procedures for bad loans and participate in debt recovery following legal provisions.
Drafting of court documentations.
Liaise with external lawyers, external and internal auditors on non routine matters that can affect HOFOKAM Ltd.
Perform any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Qualification

Must have had a minimum of at least three years experience in Micro-credit operations or banking or law firm at a senior level with at least a University honors degree in law from a recognized University.
Post graduate diploma in legal practice from Law Development Centre.
Enrolled advocate for at least (three) years.
Valid Practicing certificate and proficiency in computer literacy is a must.
Minimum Competencies Required

To be able to dispose the above responsibilities, the legal officer should have at least the following capabilities:
Experience in small retail banking financial operations;
Experience in training and mentoring staff with no legal back ground.
Familiar with emerging issues related Jo localization of HOFOKAM as a Microfinance institution;
Strong capability to manage transition process towards localization.
Strong written and oral communication, negotiation, mediation and problem solving skills.
Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment and foster teamwork among the field and head office staff, a person of high integrity and incorruptible minds with interpersonal skills.
Be self motivated, dynamic, analytical and result oriented
Should not be above 37 years of age.
