Job Description


JOB TITLE: PAYMENTS ACCOUNTANT

REPORTING TO: Financial Controller

JOB PURPOSE:
• To ensure that the Accounts Payable section is properly managed in line with the established processes and procedures to ensure that all company costs are accurately captured and payments effected to vendors on a timely basis.
• To ensure accuracy of the Supplier Master Address Book.
• To manage and coordinate all matters related to VAT and WHT in order to fully comply with relevant Statutory as well as Group accounting requirements.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Processing and Managing payments
• Ensure all payments to suppliers/vendors are properly authorised; processed on a timely basis as per contract or set guidelines.
• Process updates to the Supplier Master which are authentic and properly authorised
• Correct allocation(coding) of company expenses and other costs as per chart of accounts and follow up any required account set ups (subsidiaries, Automatic Accounting Instructions , General Ledger class code etc)
• Monitor prepayments accounts including Duty accounts
• Periodically review Accounts Payable procedures and monitor adherence to mitigate any associated risks.
• Monitor freight accruals to ensure correctness of freight costs taken up.
• Ensure monthly reconciliation of assigned balance sheet accounts as well as supplier statement reconciliations.
• Follow up on queries arising from statutory audits related to Accounts Payable processing.

Taxation Management
• Prepare and submit accurate monthly VAT and WHT returns within the statutory deadlines.
• Ensure timely payments to (or claims from) the tax authorities and recorded accurately
• Focal point on all matters related to VAT and WHT and provides advice plus guidance on how such matters affect the company’s operations and in particular monitor any changes highlighting any potential impact on the company.
• Monitor excise duty prepayments and accountabilities as well as other applicable import duties.
• Facilitate VAT audits and follow up on any findings arising thereof.

JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Educational background
• Bachelor’s degree in business, Commerce, Statistics, Economics or Mathematics and a professional accounting qualification (ACCA/CPA).

Key Competences
• Financial accounting
• Working knowledge of accounting standards (IAS / IFRS)
• Knowledge of Group Reporting Procedures.
• General Ledger Accounting with bias in accounts payable and accounting for VAT
• Knowledge of Uganda tax laws with specific emphasis on VAT under mixed supplies
• Analytical skills with keen interest for detail.
• Good Supervisory and communication Skills
• Integrity and honesty plus high level dedication
• Knowledge and experience in the use of accounting packages.
