Job Title: Post-Doctoral Social Scientist


The MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS was established in 1989, based on a bilateral agreement between the Governments of Uganda and the United Kingdom. The overall goal of the Unit is to contribute to an improvement of the health of the people in developing countries, particularly in Uganda and other parts of sub-Saharan Africa.
The Social Science Programme conducts social and behavioural research. It performs investigations that help to understand and interpret the results of clinical and epidemiological studies as well as HIV intervention trials, but has also its own anthropological and behavioural programme of work. It is staffed with one senior and three junior social scientists and a team of interviewers and field workers.
The Unit is based at Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in Entebbe where current activities of the programme are mainly based with three field sites at Kampala, Kyamulibwa and Masaka.
The Unit invites applications from suitably qualified Ugandans to fill position of:
Post-Doctoral Social Scientist.
The holder of the position will develop a body of work within the research portfolio of social science studies in the context of HIV infection and related chronic diseases in Uganda. He/she will work under the guidance of the Head of Programme, Prof Janet Seeley, with scientists based in other programmes of the Unit, including the epidemiological and prevention programme, the HIV care programme, the basic science programme and with colleagues from collaborating academic institutions.

Requirement:
The successful candidate will have a PhD degree in social science or a related field.
He/she will have experience in social science research using both qualitative and quantitative research techniques.
He/she will be developing a track record of relevant research publications in peer-reviewed journals, with a focus on HIV infection and AIDS. Good interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are also essential, as are excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
Experience in working with rural populations and high-risk behaviour groups will be an added advantage.

How to apply:
Successful applicants will serve a 2 year contract with a possibility of renewal inclusive of a 6 months’ probation.

Location: Mainly Entebbe, but the post holder visits field stations and rural/urban activities as required for the programme of work.
Start date: As soon as possible.
