Job Title: Project leader – older people studies

Job Description


Job purpose:

To lead the teams in projects related to older people in Entebbe. Masaka town and Kalungu District. The holder will report to the Head of the Social Science Programme.

Roles & Responsibilities

Manage the finalisation of protocols and other documentation for projects related to older people and ensure all stages of the regulatory process are completed (MRC Science meeting review.
SEC review, UNCST/ President’s office review and, once approved, progress reporting and final reporting to regulatory bodies).
Undertake the design and implementation of data collection tools for projects, as appropriate. This includes taking an active part in testing, piloting and undertaking design and management of research tools and associated activities
Participate in data collection, as may be required. Oversee team in the development coding framework etc. for qualitative data analysis
Liaise with the Statistics Section on the management of quantitative data
Conduct both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Undertake preparation ol manuscripts for publication and prepare presentations of project findings for conferences and workshops both as lead author and as participating author (as may be required).
Manage the field team leaders, providing guidance as appropriate in the planning and implementation of their work schedule and reviewing their work on a regular basis to ensure that quality is maintained.
Ensure, and from time to time participate in, the dissemination of results at the local and national level, including to study participants.
Contribute to staff development, including conducting or supporting training courses as appropriate, undertake staff appraisals and generally help to ensure that the field team and any associated workers progress.
Maintain financial oversight of projects under their leadership, ensuring that expenditure is within budget limits, working in consultation with the Programme Head.
Represent the Programme Head at national and international meetings, including presenting papers and posters at conferences and meetings.
Work in close collaboration with staff from other programmes and external researchers, as may be appropriate.
Education. Skills and Experience needed

An advanced degree social science or public health.
A medical degree would be an added advantage.
Sound knowledge of research with older people is a requirement.
Significant knowledge of HIV/AIDS
Significant knowledge of gerontology
Competent use ol Microsoft word. Microsoft excel. PowerPoint and Nvivo
Competence in desk top publishing
Terms and conditions:

Successful applicants will serve a 10 month contract with a possibility of renewal, if funding permits, inclusive of a 3 months’ probation.

The MRC/UVRI Research Unit on AIDS is a bilateral multi-disciplinary research organization funded by Medical Research Council (UK), DFID (UK) and other donor organizations and has been operational in Uganda since 1988. It is a centre of excellence in research conducting large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies, clinical trials, biological and immunological research and behavioral studies which have generated a wealth of research results to inform policy and practice. The unit established a field clinic in Kyamulibwa, one of its field stations to offer medical care to study participants and also conduct clinic based studies.
The Unit therefore invites applications from suitably qualified Ugandans to fill the above position.

Location: The position will be based in Entebbe with frequent travel to the field.
