JOB OPPORTUNITY: Medical Officer
The MRC/UVRI Research Unit on AIDS is a bilateral multi-disciplinary research organisation funded by Medical Research Council (UK), DFID (UK) and other donor organisations and has been operational in Uganda since 1988. It is a centre of excellence in research, conducting large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies, clinical trials, biological and immunological research and behavioural studies which have generated a wealth of research results to inform policy and practice. The Entebbe Mother and Baby Study is a birth cohort, within which children are now at school age. Current studies within th§ cohort are investigating how prenatal and early-life exposures relate to the risk of allergy-related diseases in school-age children.

The Unit therefore invites applications from suitably qualified Ugandans to fill the position of MEDICAL OFFICER. The successful clinician will join a team of clinical and research staff at the Entebbe Hospitals and Uganda Virus Research Institute.

Job purpose:

To work with the mothers and their children participating in the Entebbe Mother and Baby Study. The project is based in Entebbe, and run in collaboration with the Entebbe Hospitals. The successful applicant will be involved in collecting clinical research data about the participants, and in providing health care for them.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The work will involve care, investigation and follow up of the mothers and their children and collection of research data.

Education, Skills and Experience needed:

•    MB ChB degree with at least two years of clinical hospital practice, including experience of paediatrics.
•    Proficiency in Luganda.

•    Postgraduate training in paediatrics or in epidemiology and research methods would be an advantage but is not necessary.

•    Certificate in Good Clinical Practice is an added advantage

Terms and conditions:

Successful applicants will serve an initial a 2-year contract which is renewable based on performance and funding.. Other terms and conditions for the post are within the MRC salary scales and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The post provides an excellent opportunity for study/ introduction to research.

Location: The position will be based at Entebbe’

Start date: August 2012.
