Job Title: Agronomists

About this Job:
Action Against Hunger (ACF) is an international humanitarian NGO. For over thirty years it has been implementing Food Security and Livelihoods, Nutrition, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programs in Lira, Apac, Oyam, Otuke, Gulu, Kaabong, Napak and Moroto Districts.

ACF now seeks to hire 2 (two) highly competent, dynamic and experienced Agronomists; one will be based in Moroto and another one will be based in Kaabong. The Agronomist is under the Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) department. The Agronomist applies the knowledge to strengthen the crop production strategies through improved agronomic practices and reviewing and recommend the appropriate productive assets for agro-pastoral community in Karamoja, He/she assists the FSL Programme Manager in the follow up of implementation, organizing training for staff and beneficiaries. He/she will further spearhead in the designing the House hold income support programme and PWP sub projects. He/she will assist in assuring objectives are achieved according to the framework/proposals & protocols. Together with the PM, He/she will participate in collaboration meeting where all stakeholders, including DPO/District water engineer are attending

Responsibilities:

Train ACF and community members on best agronomic practices (row planting, spacing and irrigation techniques and post harvest handling)
Perform regular field checks and identify problems and come up with a possible solutions
Together with the FSL team, Develop community training guide; conduct training for programme participants;
Monitor programme implementation and individual household and community project progress;
Support the PM in identifying suitable staples and vegetables for Karamoja region;
Conduct germination test for the various crop and vegetable seeds;
Monitoring of field activities to verify if the skills and knowledge gained are applied on the ground;
Provide information or recommendations to farmers or other land owners regarding ways in which they can best use land, promote plant growth, or avoid or correct problems such as erosion;
Develop methods of conserving or managing soil that can be applied by farmers;
Conduct research to determine best methods of planting, spraying, cultivating, harvesting, storing, processing, transporting horticultural products and value additions;
Conduct regular programme monitoring field activities and review against target.
Participate in new programme development.
Act as a link between ACF and programme participants.
Work closely with district production officer and the sub county community development officers and development agents.
Explain programme objectives and activities to stakeholders and participants
Together with the PM, is responsible for internal and external reports like weekly (FSL Sitrep), monthly, quarterly and final reports with respect of the formats and deadlines with all indicators.
Contribute to the monthly and quarterly donor report and strips.
With PM, ensure that reporting is followed according to guidelines and formats.
Requirement:
Academic Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Soil Science)/ Natural Resources Management/Environmental Sciences.
Experience:

2 years/ Solid previous food security/development studies experience
Specific Skills:

Good written and spoken English. Knowledge of Ngakarimojong an asset.
Excellent computer skills (MS- office and spread sheets, Analytical software are assets,)
Good management, communication, team spirit, community participation and capacity building (training), report and proposal writing
