Action Against Hunger (ACF) is an international humanitarian NGO. For over thirty years it has been implementing Food Security and Livelihoods, Nutrition, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programs in Lira, Apac, Oyam, Otuke, Gulu, Kaabong, Napak and Moroto Districts.

Watershed Management Officer

ACF now seeks to hire two (2) highly competent, dynamic and experienced Watershed Management Officers; one will be based in Moroto and another one will be based in Kaabong.

The WSMO Plan or develop coordinated practices for soil erosion control, soil or water conservation, or sound land use through interventions such as food for work, and cash for work in Napak /Kaabong Districts of Karamoja region, Northeast Uganda. He/ she assists the FSL Programme Manager in the follow up of implementing, organizing training, and database of all components of the programs and work with district Water and production officers. He/she will assist in assuring objectives progressed and are achieved according to the framework/proposals & protocols. Together with PM, He/she will participate in collaboration meeting where partners including DPO/District water engineer, etc are attending.

Responsibilities:

♦   Develop and implement soil and water management techniques, such as erosion control, buffers, or filter strips, in accordance with conservation plans.

♦   Advise land users, such as farmers or pastoralists, on plans, problems, or alternative conservation solutions.

- Compute cost estimates of different conservation practices, based on needs of land users, maintenance requirements, or life expectancy of the scheme.

♦   Help the farmers to establish furrow irrigation.

♦   Evaluate or recommend geographic information systems (GIS) applications to address issues such as surface water quality, groundwater quality, ecological risk assessments, or environmental contamination.

♦   Plan soil management or conservation practices, such as crop rotation, reforestation, permanent vegetation, contour plowing, or terracing, to maintain soil or conserve water.

♦   Review proposed wetland restoration assessments or provide technical recommendations.

♦   Develop water conservation or harvest plans, using weather information systems, irrigation information management systems, or other sources of daily evapo-transpiration (ET) data

♦   Develop, conduct, or participate in surveys, studies, or investigations of various land uses to inform corrective action plans.

♦   Analyze results of investigations to determine measures needed to maintain or restore proper soil management.

♦   Act as a link between ACF and programme participants and the district line departments

♦   Work closely with district production officer and the sub county community development officers

♦   Together with the PM, She/He is responsible for internal and external reports like weekly (FSLSitrep), monthly, quarterly and final reports with respect of the formats and deadlines with all indicators

♦   Together with the PM, ensure that reporting is followed according to guidelines and formats

Requirement:
Academic Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (soil science)/ natural resources management/environmental sciences.
Experience:

2 years/ Solid previous experience in water shed management.
Specific Skills:

Good written and spoken English. Knowledge of Ngakarimojong an asset.
Excellent computer skills (MS- office and spread sheets, Analytical software are assets,)
Good management, communication, team spirit, community participation and capacity building (training), report and proposal writing.
