About this Job:
Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) is a dynamic Research and development institution, a parastatal organization under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism Trade and Industry whose mandate includes engaging in activities that will lead to rapid industrialisation of Uganda. Core activities of the Institute include:

i.    Establishment of platforms for value addition.

ii.   Technology Transfer and Technology Development.

iii.  Product development and design of industrial processes.

iv.  Enhanced provision of analytical laboratory services.

v.   Prototyping of products and processes.

vi.  Business incubation.

vii. Technical skills development and industrial internship among others.

In pursuit of the above, the Institute requires services of skilled and experienced Personnel for the following positions

Vaccine Production Trainee (2 positions)

We are seeking highly motivated individuals to be trained in vaccine production in accordance with regulatory requirements and cGMP. Responsibilities include performing a wide variety of tasks within a team environment focusing on aseptic techniques for the culturing of live viruses.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):
Initiation and maintenance of viral and bacterial cultures.
Identification and characterization of microbes.
Laboratory Management and Maintenance including active knowledge of laboratory equipment handling and maintenance, laboratory safety and aseptic techniques.
Participation in vaccine production processes from raw materials to finished product following cGMP procedures and protocols.
Additional responsibilities include preparing protocols for experiments of simple to moderate complexity under supervision, preparing technical reports, and summaries of assigned projects. Candidates must be comfortable performing laboratory bench work and experimental procedures. The individual will be required to complete training to assure compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and other regulatory requirements, and to adhere to all requirements of established quality systems.

Requirement:
Qualifications

The ideal candidate should possess a Diploma in Microbiology or a closely related field with extensive experience in bacteriology or virology. Preference will be given to individuals with work experience in a GMP Quality Control laboratory.
Experience in writing and modifying Standard Operating Procedures and fundamental knowledge of regulatory requirements, such as current GMP regulations and the ability to review and understand test data is highly desirable.
Understanding and the aDility to follow safety precautions and procedures which apply to the activities in the laboratory is required.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a dynamic fast paced environment is a necessity. Must be able to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and also have the ability to work independently.
Candidates must have strong mathematics skills; strong scientific background; excellent skills in prioritization and achievement of goals and objectives; excellent written and verbal communication skills, a strong work ethic, computer literacy, and the ability to work independently following verbal instructions and SOPs.
Flexibility and a passion to drive for results are key for this position. The position requires flexibility of time and the ability to work after hours and occasionally overnight.
